We are a cooperative house founded in 1998, located in Memphis, TN, near the University of Memphis.
At the house we have a big organic garden, a reading library, and a zine library. We are involved in community outreach which includes a community garden in collaboration with the Peace and Justice Center and a Darkroom Cooperative. If you would like to live at the co-op, you should contact us. If you want to find out more about what's happening at DeCleyre, call or simply drop by.
Living at DeCleyre. Ah yes. It can be really awesome sometimes but it's definitely not for everyone. The members of the co-op, as a group, are democratically responsible for overall cooperative governance. This means that you have to be willing and able to work together as a group to make decisions about the affairs of the house. Many of the residents have special skills in multiple areas, there is a lot of DIY ethic. Now here's some of the basic requirements. It sounds obvious but it bears repeating: Minimally you should have some experience living on your own, paying for bills, cleaning up after yourself...basic personal responsibility is a must, because everything you do affects not only you, but also all the other housemates. Additionally you should be prepared to deal with some pretty non-standard situations like the dynamics of living with a lot of other people, who may be very different from you and what it means to live co-operatively and create a community.
